3D Scans and location of the whole shoot environment was taken to assist in the compositing and matching the layout of the footage with the CG Renders.
For the background a panorama matte painting was added with mountains and other details.
When Adding mountains to the scenes, ZBrush is a useful tool for single assets. But as the mountain was in the majority of the shots, it would have been more efficient to use procedural assets to reuse and Create variants. This was done within Houdini to create the geometry. And substance designer was used to create the materials.
As the scenes were set up in maya, various levels of detail were used to try and keep things optimised and be accessible for the whole teams hardware. optimising the scenes included only using geometry that is seen in the shot and reduce the polys that aren't close up.
Its also to add assets that match its environment, for example if the footage is full of foliage, adding lots of foliage from that region. Using instances was a lot easier and lighter to work with in Maya.
Lighting- given a HDRI taken from the day of the shoot, but before you use the hdri you need to ensure the HDRI uses the same colour space as the footage and edit it accordingly. It's also important to colour correct the shots to ensure they are consistent. as several shots may be taken in different times of the day.
Splitting the render into separate parts is useful as it allows for quicker changes/ fixes later on, E.G. if the plants don't render properly, It will be quicker just re-rendering the plants rather than the whole shot. Arnold Render engine is used for the rendering.
Adding reflections to the car, from newly added CG environment is faked by rendering the reflections of the CG environment onto a CG version of the car. and a reflection render pass is used in compositing.
For Large projects, to make them less daunting. Its good to know exactly what you need to do before you start the project and break the big task into smaller manageable tasks.
