Chloe Dawe - The Craft of creating characters - Character supervisor at Untold Studios

When it comes to making realistic CGI characters, "The devil is in the details" but choose wisely on where to spend time on detailing- Don't make high level of detail where it won't be seen, this can be decided beforehand in planning of shots. E.g. in terms of texturing for this video, the main close ups are on the face, where the nose mouth and horns weren't covered with hair so needed more attention to detail.

When collating reference 'Pureref' is a great free tool. Reference used to breakdown what makes the subject who they are and how they are structured, structure of the body, face and silhouette. Shots were planned to change from Extreme close up to a wide 3/4 shot. Challenges included: -making multiple shots seamlessly cut into one shot, a workaround for this was looking away from the subject to the sky, making the camera cut easier to edit. -Finding appealing angles of the face with the camera angles. -Before the shoot, it was important to take into account the placement and size of the cow on the bike, so the driver in the shoot can be easily edited out. -Fur- a simple cow head was taken on set to see how the fur moves with the wind.

-The fur on the head needed to look natural, without looking like a wig and making the eyes visible.
