Cinematic storytelling with Jen Mackie

Started as a layout artist and worked in editing 3D animation is another type of film where cinematography is very important in telling your story and setting the shots in an aesthetically pleasing way Layout, editing, story and camera. There are rules in these areas but it can be evolved. continuing a line of action prevents confusion for changing cameras for example having a shot of someone running from left to right in the frame, and in the next shot from right to left, -if both shots have them running in the same direction in the frame it will look like a chase, -if they are running for either side of the frame it will look like they running towards each other. another example is the 180 rule

Aspect ratio can effect the feel of the film, anamorphic lenses can be used for super widescreen shots but have a tendency to create lens flares. creating the feeling of control in shots: using straight lines/ flat forms within the shot, keeping symmetry and using still cameras

Creating energy in the shot: Asymmetrical, angled compositions and moving cameras curves in the shot imply safety For a dramatic shot- slow camera moving through scene. you shouldn’t know what is happening as much as it makes you feel. Directing lines in a shot are used to focus on the main focal point.

Filming from the character perspective helps you empathise with them about the subject they are looking at.

you can only believe in the character if the environment itself is believable, if its an area you struggle in, collaborate, to produce higher quality work, it’s the process of working in the industry, its not cheating, it’s experience, just make sure to credit them. filming with a static camera isn’t believable, as we cannot be perfectly still enough, so we cannot see static irl, so even if the shot is a still try make even subtle movements, even if its hard to notice it will be much more convincing. the camera should actually feel like you went there and shot it, this can be don’t by simply keying faint realistic camera movements, tracking footage and using the camera from that, lens emulators help, also take in consideration using shallow depth of field/ lens distortion, etc. slow camera push, can be used to imply that something is about to happen/ there is a connection with something, this is a good way of creating anticipation. to get a better understanding of how to create emotional scenes, try watching a scene from a film which you’d consider emotional, and watch it without sound and see what aspect makes you feel a certain way. layout artists- layout is done after the blocking stage, lighting is then done with layout then the animators polish the shots 3D layout creates a variety of examples of shots from different angles/ set ups which are developed to best describe the scene and once approved will be passed onto animators.
