Book to Screen - Magic Light - Barney Goodland + Vici King

Working through the entire production the Audience are the centre of everything. Quality is the main focus specifically for the story and visuals. But simplify areas where possible. Books- basing animated short films and shows off books that have a proven audience reduces the risk factor. but is vital when making an adaption to stay true to the book. that being said there are ways to expand upon it in the space between the pages E.G. like the journey from scene to scene. so long as the meaning of the story is kept. So really analyse and dig into what the book is about.

When developing the story it's good practice to ask 'Why?' Why did you choose this book? Why Are this characters appealing? Why are the characters thinking this way? (what are their motivations?)

When creating content for pre-school kids there are very specific age groups. E.G. 2-4 years, 3-5 years, 4-6 years, etc. Find the specific group needs- where, why and how would that age group access the content? Starting with animatics are crucial to nail down at the start, as editing and making changes is much faster with less risks. and help get the story and tone right. Getting feedback (even from kids) in the animatics really was pivotal and helped progress tremendously. working in contact with the author helps maintain their vision of the story.

The Following Image is one of their projects. Where the background Can have sets made of clay and the characters are CGI rendered over them.

Pip and Posy is a world made naturally for kids- a story solely cast by kids. and removing the adult narrator helped this and in doing this, they realised that the story worked just as well without a narrator. the show only includes aspects that are important to kids E.G. Fun, friends and play. and places like the park and home, not shops, dentists, etc. 'Kids learn everything through play'- young age groups understand feelings through friends and family. Be bold with your choices, Big changes made sooner are worth the effort. some developments have around 70-80 animatic versions to ensure they reach their potential. The pip and posy book had a target audience of 1-3 year olds. so the series progresses that audience +1/2 years older than the books audience. Educational consultants point the right direction of the stories path. and help ensure that its age appropriate and sends out the right message and tone.
